This World Brain Day, let’s stop asking “Can AI beat us?” and start celebrating the messy, beautiful, irreplaceable magic inside our skulls.

Every time a new AI model drops, the collective anxiety spikes. We see people panic about job displacement, creativity theft, and a frightening future where artificial intelligence outsmarts raw human talent.
But here is the truth:
The human brain is not a computer, and it was never meant to be one. While AI processes data at lightning speed, it cannot experience some of the most remarkable qualities of the human brain.
1. The Radical Vulnerability of Empathy
Yes, Artificial Intelligence can:
- Detect a teardrop
- Analyse vocal tremors
- Generate a perfectly grammatical condolence message
That is programmed sympathy—a clinical observation of distress.
Human empathy involves a network of brain regions and systems associated with mirror neurons. These networks help us recognise, understand, and often share another person’s emotional state.
When you watch a friend cry, your nervous system physically mirrors their anguish. You don’t just understand their pain; you feel it in your gut, your chest, and in your racing pulse.
But empathy is more than shared suffering—it requires vulnerability. To truly connect, your brain must momentarily drop its defenses, suspend judgment, and step into another’s subjective reality.
AI has no skin in that game.
It cannot be heartbroken, exhausted, or scared, nor can it sit in a heavy presence with a grieving parent.
Real empathy is exhausting, unpredictable, and deeply inefficient—and that inefficiency is exactly what makes it sacred.
2. The Chaotic Genius of True Imagination
If you ask AI to “invent a new colour,” it will remix wavelengths and hex codes from existing data.
If you ask it to “imagine a world without time,” it will stitch together sci-fi tropes from its training set.
While AI can do recombinations using the content already created by humans years ago, it cannot ever carry out the raw process of imagination.
Human imagination is radically different—it can combine memories, emotions, abstract ideas, and experiences into mental simulations that extend far beyond immediate reality.
Your brain can create a purple elephant that speaks Chanayka’s truths. It can dream of flying islands, time-traveling grandparents, or flavors that don’t exist.
More importantly, human imagination is non-linear. It connects the scent of rain to a childhood memory, the sound of a violin to a future aspiration, and the texture of wood to a philosophical epiphany—all in a single, synaptic flash.
Again, this is not about being “creative” in the artistic sense; not all of us are artists.
This is about counterfactual thinking. While your brain can actively simulate realities that contradict the data it has received, AI can only generate outputs by identifying statistical patterns in its training data.
Human beings can rebel against the past. We can envision a world of absolute peace even when history shows only war.
That defiant, impossible hope remains one of the defining characteristics of human cognition, that no AI can ever beat.
3. The Phoenix-Like Power of Resilience (Post-Traumatic Growth)
This is perhaps our greatest secret weapon, and most of us don’t even know it.
When any machine crashes, it requires a long, hard reset that takes it back to square one. However, when a human brain breaks—after grief, failure, or devastation—it does something astonishing: it rewires.
This capacity is supported by neuroplasticity. At the psychological level, many people may also experience post-traumatic growth.
Resilience means bending, fracturing, and growing back stronger, wiser, and more complex in the broken places. Your brain literally reorganises neural connections that help find meaning in chaos.
The same organ that suffers trauma can, over time, transform that suffering into profound empathy, fierce purpose, and unmatched inner strength.
AI cannot be stronger for having failed. It cannot find meaning in a bug, or develop newer values after being hurt.
Your brain has the extraordinary ability to turn its deepest wounds into its greatest assets.
Hold on to that miracle, always.
