Looking for natural ways to strengthen hair and soothe an overheated scalp?

Indian hair care traditions are known worldwide for herbal remedies that support scalp health, reduce hair fall and improve hair strength and natural shine.

Traditionally used to cool and soothe the scalp. Better studied for cognitive benefits than hair growth.

Available as: Brahmi powder, Brahmi oil.

Associated with hair strength and thickness. Anti-inflammatory effects are suggested, but clinical hair growth evidence is limited.

Available as: Bhringraj powder, Bhringraj oil.

Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. May support scalp conditioning and reduce oxidative stress.

Available as: Amla powder, Amla hair oil.

Natural plant-based cleanser with gentle saponins that clean without stripping oils.

Available as: Shikakai powder or dried pods.

Supported by antimicrobial research. Often used for dandruff-prone scalp care.

Available as: Neem leaves powder or cold-pressed Neem oil.

Though not traditionally Indian, stronger clinical evidence supports rosemary oil for hair growth. A small randomised trial showed results comparable to 2% minoxidil in androgenetic alopecia.

Available as: Rosemary essential oilalways dilute in a carrier oil (such as coconut, jojoba, almond, or castor oil) before use due to its potency.

Suggested dilution: about 1–2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil.

Powdered herbs: Mix herbal powders with water or curd into a paste. Apply to the scalp and hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, then rinse.

Herbal oils: Massage into the scalp once or twice weekly. Leave for 20–30 minutes before washing.

Dilute essential oils such as rosemary before use. Perform a patch test and avoid application on inflamed or infected scalp. Discontinue if irritation occurs.

Widely used in traditional Indian hair care, these botanicals are being studied for their antioxidant and antimicrobial effects on scalp health and hair strength. Evidence quality varies, and they are not substitutes for medical treatment of significant hair loss, alopecia or scalp disease.

Choose pure, single-ingredient herbal hair products whenever possible.
